Introduction

“RPG Backpacks + is a slot based inventory system created with a survival & exploration style of game in mind. It aims to create problems that the player needs to address when carrying loot or provisions. And adds the ever needed depth a Backpack deserves.”

It is a short supplement, which offers many missing rules from a fully realized inventory & encumbrance system. Offering over 80 item examples common in fantasy RPGs, and easy rules for determining item slot capacity for items that aren't listed. Addressing things like, how Hirelings and Pack Animals fit into a system such as this one. And guidelines on how to implement them in a way that doesn't trivialize encumbrance. This supplement is designed in such a way that it can be used with just the free pages provided, however, for a complete experience, certain key features are only included in the paid version of the product. Why Backpacks?

Backpacks offer a satisfying abstraction for how items are stored within a player's inventory. But more importantly it allows the players to specialize in what kind of items they are able to carry. For instance a warrior may be interested in being able to store more weapons, and conversely a wizard may wish to protect their collection of scrolls and spellbook from the elements. It also prevents the player from storing multiple sets of ladders or dozens of greatswords within a human sized Backpack, instead offering a designating area on the outside of the pack where they may be carried.

System-Agnostic

This supplement is designed to be entirely system-agnostic. The systems within are intended to be used together with rules for: encumbrance, starvation & thirst, travel, getting lost, and any penalties associated with those activities, provided by your system of choice. As such, this supplement does not include any mention of stat blocks, damage numbers, or references to stats such as strength, dexterity, and constitution. For game systems, which lack some of those rules, general suggestions are provided instead of specific rules, to allow easy adaptability.

Ideal for use with systems such as Pathfinder, Dungeons & Dragons, OSR, and similar.

Designed for VTTs & Tabletop Play

The inventory slot system is tailored for seamless use with weight encumbrance rules, provided by your game system (recommended for use with Virtual Tabletops, where weight is automatically tallied). Or alternatively, can be used entirely without calculating weight for tabletop play. Do note, that for tabletop play, this system does not differentiate between characters of varying strength. However, such rules can be easily implemented by introducing strength based requirements on certain Backpacks, or reducing how many of their slots are available.

This supplement includes 5 pages of rules, laid out with great care to facilitate ease of read. Printable Backpack Inventory Sheets for use at the table, along with Item Slot Cutouts to allow for quick inventory management, player-to-player trading, and item dropping.
